Paramount

The iconic marquee of the former Paramount cinema in Rouyn-Noranda, a heritage symbol from the 1960s, has been fully restored to its former glory thanks to a meticulous renovation that blends historical preservation with modern flair. Initiated by Les Frangines in partnership with Construction N. Martel, this transformation aimed to breathe new life into a legendary building now repurposed as a performance venue and restaurant. Reflecteur was commissioned to design, fabricate, and install a new sign that would remain faithful to the original spirit while incorporating contemporary lighting elements. This project perfectly reflects Reflecteur’s mission: blending heritage, custom design, and technological innovation.

Marquee

Restoring the Paramount marquee was more than just a signage project, it was a living tribute to Rouyn-Noranda’s cultural history. A symbol of the golden era of neighborhood cinemas, this iconic sign was carefully reimagined to preserve its legacy while meeting today’s visual and technical standards.

Dating back to the 1960s, the marquee was one of the last remaining heritage structures of its kind in the region. Its distinctive silhouette and nostalgic glow made it a downtown landmark. The project, led by Les Frangines and managed structurally by Construction N. Martel, allowed Reflecteur to apply its expertise to bring it back to life, while enhancing its visual impact with a modern twist.

Reflecteur’s mission was to create a sign that respected the original shape and style, while integrating modern technology. Two large backlit message boards with interchangeable letters now allow for customized messaging based on the venue’s programming. Around the structure, nearly one hundred LED bulbs recreate the nostalgic glow of classic cinemas, with the energy efficiency of today.

The name “PARAMOUNT,” displayed on two separate freestanding letter signs, acts as a strong visual anchor in the heart of the city. The reverse channel lettering used for the logo adds a contemporary touch while maintaining the facade’s classic aesthetic. This mix of typography, lighting, and dimensional elements gives the marquee a commanding presence, both day and night.

The installation required meticulous coordination between teams: removal of the old sign, precise measurements of the restored structure, and fine adjustments during the final installation. The technical challenge was significant, but it was executed with precision to ensure stability, aesthetic integrity, and long-term durability.

This project embodies Reflecteur’s approach: transforming historically significant sites into modern visual landmarks, while honoring their original essence. Today, the restored marquee plays a central role in the cultural revitalization of the downtown area, drawing a new audience while rekindling cherished memories among former moviegoers.
