Pedestrian Zone of Rouyn-Noranda

Réflecteur was commissioned by the City of Rouyn-Noranda to design, fabricate, and install access barriers for the new downtown pedestrian zone. This ambitious project aimed to meet needs for safety, functionality, and urban beautification. Designed as true pieces of urban furniture, the barriers combine thoughtful design with public friendliness. Creative Rest Area

The access barrier project for Rouyn-Noranda’s pedestrian zone is part of a broader municipal effort to revitalize the downtown area by creating a safe, welcoming, and visually pleasant space for pedestrians. Developed in close collaboration with the City, the project needed to effectively restrict motor vehicle access while contributing to the harmonious development of the urban landscape.

Our team created multifunctional mobile barriers that stand out thanks to their thoughtful design and smart integration of urban furniture elements. Each structure features a sturdy aluminum bench, offering pedestrians a convenient place to rest. Weather-resistant and easy to maintain, these benches help make the pedestrian zone more accessible and enjoyable.

To further enhance the user experience, each barrier also includes an integrated aluminum flower box. This element brings a refreshing touch of greenery to the urban setting, contributing to a lively, welcoming, and vibrant environment. The addition of plants and flowers beautifies the space while promoting a sense of well-being among citizens and visitors.

Each barrier also includes a privacy panel. Designed to define space while providing visual separation, this element enhances the safety and comfort of the pedestrian zone. It contributes to the overall cohesion of the installation while reinforcing both its functionality and aesthetic appeal.

The choice of materials was key to ensuring the durability of the installation in variable weather conditions. By combining treated wood, aluminum composite, painted aluminum, and adhesive vinyl, we achieved a balance of strength, lightness, and elegance. The vibrant, modern color palette was chosen to align with the city’s new brand identity, “Douce Rebel,” while adding a contemporary flair.

This project was a resounding success, winning 1st place in the “Signage Projects” category. It serves as a powerful showcase of our ability to blend creativity, functionality, and sustainability in service of community development.
