Rouyn-Noranda Convention Centre
As part of the cultural movement Culturat, an initiative aimed at promoting the integration of art in public spaces in Rouyn-Noranda, visual artist Karine Berthiaume created an inspiring artwork titled Gardienne du temps (Guardian of Time). This original installation was placed on the walkway connecting the Rouyn-Noranda Convention Centre to Hôtel Le Noranda, a place where time seems suspended, yet where life and events are constantly intertwined.

Architectural Art Integration
The Gardienne du temps project required close collaboration between the artist and our team. We supported the artist throughout the entire process—from the initial presentation to the integration planning within the existing architecture, and finally to the development of structural and technical plans required for its realization. The project was designed to harmonize with the building’s architecture by integrating the building’s windows into the main structure.
Gardienne du temps stands out for its materials, forms, and symbolism. The structure is primarily composed of aluminum coated in copper, adding warmth and brightness. Copper, which naturally patinas over time, symbolizes aging and transformation, while stainless steel represents stability and permanence. These materials were carefully chosen for their durability and ability to interact with natural elements throughout the seasons.
The lettering covering parts of the artwork was digitally printed on clear adhesive vinyl, allowing the underlying materials to remain visible. This technique ensures high precision in the visual motifs and long-lasting graphics, thanks to the UV-protective film. In addition to industrial materials, the work includes a round illuminated box that casts a soft and calming light. This subtle use of materials allows the piece to blend into its surroundings while maintaining a majestic and timeless presence.
The artwork is located in a space where visitors can view it both from a distance and up close. It was designed to interact with the walkway’s architecture, creating a striking visual contrast between the metal structure and the fluid forms of the acrylic. As people pass through the walkway, they are invited to observe the artwork’s details, feel the evolving light reflections, and reflect on the concept of time and history it embodies.
Gardienne du temps is more than just a piece of art, it is a visual landmark in the Vieux-Noranda neighborhood of Rouyn-Noranda. It marks the entrance to a place of exchange, gathering, and reflection, serving as a symbolic bridge between the past, present, and future. By integrating this piece into the public space, Karine Berthiaume offers citizens and visitors a fascinating object that encourages slowing down and reflecting on the passage of time and the significance of each moment.
This project not only beautified an urban space but also highlights the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region’s commitment to integrating art into the daily lives of its citizens, enriching the visual and cultural experience of all who pass through.
